Smartcool Systems Inc ECO3
Challenge
Smartcool Systems Inc. engaged Tiller Scientific + Medical to create a device which optimised compressor performance in air-conditioning and refrigeration units, delivering energy savings and reducing costs. The device needed to be both easy to retrofit and future-proof.
Our objective was to create a device that was not only simple to install, but ran a software platform compatible with all current and potential air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
The product also needed to meet several compliance standards, including UL, CE and RoHS, as well as adhere to Smartcool’s stringent sustainable design guidelines.

Concept Sketch
Solution
We worked closely with Smartcool to understand the constraints of the product’s architecture as well as the company’s sustainable design parameters. The design of the ECO3™ needed to be as sophisticated as the tasks it performed, and able to withstand any weather. Careful management of materials and design produced a cohesive and refined system.
An iterative process of concept sketch development, modelling and prototyping took place, with verification testing ensuring that performance accuracy could be achieved within the design.
Tiller Scientific + Medical used 3D CAD to refine the industrial design concurrently with the hardware electronics and software development from which the product was ultimately produced. Software and electronics were also developed by Tiller Scientific+Medical.
Through our quality assured design, engineering and prototype verification process, we developed a brand aligned product that has become an essential part of Smartcool’s business.

CAD Development
Result
The ECO3™ has been designed to reduce the environmental impact, lower running costs and optimise compressor life in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The product reduces air conditioning and cooling plants’ electricity consumption by 15-25%.
The product itself meets strict sustainable design criteria. The plastics can be recycled and the electronics will not contribute to heavy metal pollution at the end of life.
The product is now distributed throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia to clients such as Woolworths, Big W, Coles Myer, Kmart, Target, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, LIDL supermarkets, Notrica Market and McDonalds.
